What is Clubhouse?

As lockdowns globally continue, the days of sitting on the Soho House waiting list and feeling the ultimate FOMO seem to be a thing of the past. Introducing Clubhouse…think of it as the digital Soho House.

What is Clubhouse?

In short: Clubhouse is an audio-based social media app. The company describes itself as “a new type of social product based on voice that allows people everywhere to talk, tell stories, develop ideas, deepen friendships, and meet interesting new people around the world.’’

The app launched in April 2020 starting with just 3,500 members around the world. Popular with celebrities such as Oprah, Drake, and Ashton Kutcher the app now sits at around 600k members, with it still currently only available to those who are invited.

The Clubhouse app is straight out of Silicon Valley and being dubbed ‘the next big thing’ in social. For those who can get inside, you will find a variety of topics being discussed in chat rooms, with people from all over the world hosting talks on subjects like music, film, beauty, tech, race, and influencers.

You can get as involved as you want, simply listen in to conversations or be the one hosting and leading chats. Unlike most social media apps, Clubhouse is one where you’ve got to be there to avoid missing out. None of the conversations are recorded, and transcripts are not made available after the fact.

How do I get an invite?

When someone joins Clubhouse, they’re automatically granted two invitations they can send using their phone number, so your invitation is likely to come from a friend already on the app.

In the meantime, whilst you wait for your golden ticket, you can download Clubhouse from the app store and register to reserve your username.

How to set up your profile

Similarly, to Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, you are assigned a profile where you can upload a profile picture and a section to write out your bio.

Some tips to consider when building your profile:

– Clubhouse is a great place to network, so think of it as LinkedIn/Twitter, making it both professional and personal.

– You can add in your Twitter and Instagram handles that are hyperlinked. So, make sure if you are using Clubhouse for work purposes, that you are happy for fellow clubhouser’s to view your personal social media accounts.

– You can use keywords in your bio that will make you more findable when people are searching for accounts to follow.

– List topics you’re interested in discussing to let people know what types of conversations you want to be invited to.

It has not been a year since the app has gone live and its worth is in the region of $100 million, with much more room for growth. We look forward to seeing where this exciting new platform goes and will keep you updated!
